An Exciting Future for The Lutheran Home at Kane

The Kane Republican - Kane, Pennsylvania - The Lutheran Home at Kane (LHK), a small, stand-alone, faith based senior living community recently announced its plans for a major expansion and renovation project.

The Lutheran Home at Kane has not undergone any major renovations or expansions in nearly 25 years. The facility will be adding a $5.3 million expansion and plans to break ground later this year.

The expansion and renovation project includes the construction of a 10,700 square foot addition which includes a new, secure 16-bed Alzheimer’s/Dementia Unit with all private resident rooms; a new energy efficient kitchen; a café for residents, visitors, and employees; eight private rooms designated for short-term rehabilitation; a non-denominational chapel; an enclosed, secure, outdoor courtyard; additional office space, a conference room, and storage.

The Lutheran Home at Kane Board of Directors Vice Chair, Carol Lundgren, said all involved are working toward meeting the changing needs of senior care.

“The addition of private rooms for short- term rehabilitation is a very much needed aspect of the building project at The Lutheran Home at Kane.  For many years, nursing homes carried the stigma of being a place to go to die.  Today, this is not always the case.  The rehabilitation unit enables residents to come to The Lutheran Home following a hospital stay or surgery, especially if there is no one at home to care for them, and to receive physical therapy after hip or knee replacement.  Once the resident has recuperated, they are discharged home,” Lundgren said.  “From my 22 years of experience working in the long-term care industry, I know that as each generation ages, they are looking for more amenities when searching for a nursing facility and private rooms is at the top of the list.”

Lutheran Home at Kane Board President, Dale K. McLaughlin, agreed that the renovation of the existing facility will also offer residents with more privacy in the future.

“Privacy is something that we all cherish.  Unfortunately, privacy is diminished when anyone enters a skilled facility.  Our building and renovation project will greatly increase the number of private rooms in The Lutheran Home.  Since our staff strives to respect privacy and dignity and independence of all of our residents, these private rooms will greatly facilitate how our staff can meet those needs,” McLaughlin said.

The Lutheran Home at Kane Chief Executive Officer, Charlotte Floravit, added that the renovations will allow the facility and the staff to provide even better care of residents in the future by providing for all special needs.

“We have a rich history of being a recognized leader in providing quality and compassionate skilled nursing services to the region.  They come to us – weak in mind and in body – and quickly realize how loved they are.  Because of our special approach, we are one of the premier institutions of our kind,” Floravit said.  “In order to be the best, you must provide the best.  Our vision is to be the provider of choice and the employer of choice for the region.  Our Board-approved Strategic Plan ensures we are positioning ourselves to care for the needs of our residents today and for years to come.”
